Short Workshop Supply List

PIGMENT

Watercolors – Bring your standard watercolor palette with your paints in it, we will use watercolors and mixed media; acrylics, or inks may also be used. Watercolors:  bring paint colors that satisfy your taste including a set of primary colors and white. Acrylic paint: White, Neutrals, set of primary colors. White.

BRUSHES

Bring your standard brushes but please include:

  • 1″ or 2″ Wash brushes (Hake brushes are fine)
  • 10 or #12 round brush
  • 1 3-inch small roller, foam or “fuzzy”

PAPER

  • 140# watercolor paper (2-3 pieces, your choice of brands, cold press is fine
  • 2-4 Sheets of Yupo paper any mid to heavy weight, not translucent (available through Cheap Joe’s)

Miscellaneous

  • Sketchbook (necessary)
  • Index cards (4×6), wide, clear packaging tape
  • Tape – masking or white artist tape, various widths for masking lines
  • Kleenex, paper towels or rags (your preference)
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Watercolor pencils
  • Water container
  • Pushpins
  • Board to work upon Gatorboard is best. Pins must hold on board.
  • Exacto knife/scissors, Pink Pearl eraser, graphite pencil
  • 20-30 magazine photos with color that appeal to you or 4 or 5 Magazines. Photos are to be those that have color, shape, and form that you like and respond to. Choose magazines with color and shape that you like.

PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES…. BE COMFORTABLE…. GLOVES ARE NICE DON’T WORRY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL SUPPLIES…. WE CAN SHARE. I will be bringing Robert Doak Liquid Watercolors and each person will be asked for a $20.00 donation to cover their use.

We’ll use those old materials lying around your studio. Watercolors: bring paint colors that satisfy your taste including a set of primary colors and white. Acrylic paint: White, Neutrals, set of primary colors. I use the Golden Liquid Acrylics, Quinacridone Magenta, Phthalo Turquoise, Hansa Yellow Medium, and Titanium White.

BRUSHES

Your standard brushes, please include:

  • 10 or #12 round brush
  • 1 3-inch small roller, foam or “fuzzy”

  • 140# watercolor paper (6-8 pieces, your choice of brands, cold press is fine
  • 6-8 Sheets of Yupo paper any mid to heavy weight, not translucent (available through Cheap Joe’s)
  • 2-4 old failed paintings (if you have any, we will be cutting them up)

  • Sketchbook (necessary)
  • 4-6 small 4 ounce pump spray bottles
  • Acrylic Matt medium
  • Index cards (4×6), wide, clear packaging tape
  • Tape – masking or white artist tape, various widths for masking lines
  • Kleenex, paper towels or rags (your preference)
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Watercolor pencils
  • Water container
  • Pushpins

Silhouette Workshop Supply List

  • Gator Board or painting board to work upon, should be larger than your paper
  • Sketchbook
  • Ruler, mechanical pencil or # 2 pencil, kneaded eraser, pink eraser
  • Exacto knife or scissors

Your basic painting materials

  • Watercolor palette loaded with paint or your acrylic palette and paints. Colors should include those that are to your taste and preference. Include the primaries of red, yellow, blue.
  • Watercolor paper, Arches 140 # cold pressed it takes masking well and is my preference.
  • Acrylic Matt Medium
  • A variety of brushes including 1″& 2 “wash brushes. Bring your usual array of brushes including several old or very cheap brushes (in varying sizes including small for detail) for applying masking fluid and acrylic medium
  • 2-4 2 oz bottles of fresh masking fluid
  • Clear contact paper
  • Wide masking or artists tape
  • Bucket for water and wipes of your choice.
  • Photos of silhouettes, morning or evening shots are often best but any photos that have severe lights and darks or high contrast of lights and darks. The images may be natural forms: trees rocks, bluffs, islands or structures or man-made forms: buildings boats, steeples, docks. We will manipulate, photocopy and enlarge these photos and work from them. Pick images that you really relate to and are comfortable working with.
